Kobe Bryant: In It For The Long Haul?

Kobe Bryant: In It For The Long Haul?

Longtime L.A. Lakers savior Kobe Bryant appears to have backpedaled on an early retirement claim. After tearing a rotator cuff, an injury that ended the season for the seasoned veteran in January, there was word he would not be returning next year. However in an interview with the Los Angeles Times Bryant asked, “Who the hell said I’m retiring?”

Bryant, 36, is in his 19th season with the Lakers and there is no doubt his age is beginning to take its toll. With 22 career injuries, the most substantial being a season-ending Achilles tear in 2013, all signs seem to point to retirement. “If something is going to go, it goes,” he told ESPN. “Father time got me, there’s nothing I can do about it.”

Bryant seems painfully aware of his place in a culture that favors the youth. But his spirits remain high despite his future prospects. In a documentary on Bryant released early this month he stated that he is frightened of what the future might hold. That fear may actually result in a few more years on the court for Bryant. He states, “As I sit here right now, do I want to play after next year? No. That could change.”
