Components of Physical Fitness

Defining the term physical fitness can be a little tricky as it varies from person to person but government health institutions and agencies have agreed that there are definitely five components of physical fitness and if we want to figure out how fit and healthy a body is as a whole then we have to take these components into account.

Cardiovascular fitness which is also known as cardiovascular endurance is the first component of physical fitness and relates to the efficiency with which the heart and lungs deliver oxygen and other nutrients to the required muscles and also transport waste products from the cells. It can simply be defined as the ability of the heart and lung to provide the necessary fuel and oxygen to our body without fatiguing or getting tired quickly. Muscular strength is the second component and relates to the maximum amount of force our muscle can generate in a single effort without resting. Muscular endurance is the third and involves the ability of our muscles to perform repeated movements for an extended period of time until they start to fatigue.

Flexibility is the fourth component and includes our ability to move our joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments through their whole range of motion without any discomfort pain or hindrance. It is very important for the protection of our joints and for the health of our backbone.Body composition is the fifth and final component of physical fitness and relates to the percentage of fat in our body as compared to our lean body mass. It is a great indicator of our overall fitness.
