New FIFA President marks first day with special games

Soccer (or football, as everywhere outside America calls it) is without question the most popular sport in the world. FIFA is a huge organization within the sport, with incredibly strong influence, (particularly where the World Cup is concerned). So when former FIFA President Sepp Blatter was banned from the sport for six years due to corruption, it put a very large blight on the organization. Soccer benefits when FIFA is considered trustworthy, so it was important to pick a solid new President.

The man who got the job is Gianni Infantino, who had previously been General Secretary of UEFA (the soccer organization that manages Europe). He’s promised to bring “joy” back to the sport, and started by holding a fun all-star match of past stars, with two current female players. Infantino participated in the match as well, smiling the whole time and horsing around with players while on the pitch.

Infantino is very well respected within the game, and breaking in his tenure with such a fun match that honors the history of the sport was a wonderful way to start. By all accounts, Infantino has taken a pay cut for this new role, and has yet to have a salary established. He wasn’t even seriously campaigning for the role, but ended up getting it due to so many other candidates being suspended for corruption. With a smiling face and genuine love of the game, Infantino looks to be just the positive influence FIFA needs to rehabilitate its image around the world.
