Five new sports added to Tokyo’s Olympic Games 2020

The 2016 Olympic Games conclude on 21st of August. The games were quite a spectacle, and now the next Games has been awarded to Tokyo, Japan in the year 2020. Tokyo last hosted the games in 1998; this will be their second chance at hosting the global event. A host of new games will appear on the list of disciplines for athletes to compete. The International Olympics Committee, IOC, has approved the following five games for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Baseball/Softball, Karate, Skateboard, Sports Climbing, Surfing

The decision to add these disciplines was a culmination of a two-year lobbying process, where organizing committees of the host country have the flexibility to propose new sports discipline for consideration. The IOC intends to allow and encourage innovation and flexibility with a focus on youth in the development of the Olympic program.

In September, 2015, the proposal for the addition of the games was submitted by the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee. Various factors were considered by the IOC which includes the impact on gender equality, the legacy value of adding the disciplines to the games, and the youth appeal to the sports. The addition of the games will add a total of 18 events and 474 athletes.

Skateboarding and sports climbing will be held in temporary venues installed in various urban settings. The inclusion of the games will bring the Games to young people and usher in the trend of urbanization sport. The additional disciplines, when taken together, will offer insight on the established and innovative combination of youth-focused events that are already popular in Japan. In totality, the Tokyo 2020 President Yoshiro Mori said the games are to inspire the youth to achieve their best in sport and in life.
